Against All Odds: Miracle Twins Kimyah and DJ Embrace Life’s Early Challenges

Kimyah and DJ stand as testament to resilience, emerging as among the most premature twins to survive birth at the Cleveland Clinic. Born a mere 11 months ago at just 22 weeks gestation, they were so diminutive that they could be cradled within an adult’s hand. Despite facing formidable odds, these tiny warriors have exhibited remarkable strength and are now sharing their tale of resilience with the world.

Upon their arrival, Kimyah and DJ tipped the scales at less than a pound each, necessitating immediate transfer to the neonatal intensive care unit. Kimyah weighed a mere 12 ounces, while DJ slightly more at 15 ounces, according to hospital records. At 22 weeks, their chances of survival hovered between a mere 10% to 20%, with the specter of developmental challenges looming uncertainly. Their mother, Kimberly Thomas, recalls the harrowing moment when she began leaking amniotic fluid, a crucial protective barrier within the womb. By the time she reached the hospital, she was already four centimeters dilated. “I was just scared,” she reflects.

Despite valiant efforts, Thomas went into premature labor, and on October 12, 2022, Kimyah and DJ entered the world at a mere 22 weeks and one day. Described by nurses as being “around the size of a soda can,” Kimyah and DJ faced an uphill battle from their very first breath.

The family clung to the words of caution from medical professionals, with Damante Jackson, the twins’ father, recollecting, “They said even if they do survive, it’s not likely they’d make it the first three days.” Thomas confessed, “I felt like, I know they won’t remember it, but it was hard for them.”

In their nascent months, Kimyah and DJ encountered a myriad of challenges, from a collapsed lung to a brain bleed. Yet, their family remained unwavering in their support. Their mother exhibited extraordinary resolve, spending every night by their side in the NICU. In those early days, she could scarcely hold them due to their fragile skin.

“I would then go into the NICU just to talk to my babies,” she shares. “I don’t think there was one day I didn’t spend at least a few minutes with them.”
